Twenty years ago, M+B opened in West Hollywood out of my passionate obsession with photography, an obsession that gradually expanded into art of all kinds. And so did the gallery.
In 2023, we opened Casa MB in Milan inside a 19th century apartment. The idea was simple: what if we showed art the way we actually live with it? Not in a white cube but among furniture, books, objects surrounded by rooms where people can sit down, spend some time, and see how art really becomes part of everyday life.
That same year, we opened Domo Damo in São Paulo, an artist residency in an extraordinary house designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha. What started as a home for artists to live and create has become a gathering place for even more artists, friends, and people from the art world and beyond. People come to discover new work, new artists, and a new way of being with art, all inside this truly extraordinary house.
We love what's happened.
So we've decided to take the idea even further and bring everything together under one name: Casa MB.
Our spaces in Milan and the Hollywood Hills, alongside Domo Damo in São Paulo, will all come together under Casa MB. Each home will have its own personality, with exhibitions, artists, and works to discover. Visits will be by appointment, giving us more freedom to show art in different ways and spend more time with the people who come to see it.
And even if we are leaving the white cube behind, we still hold, celebrate, and eagerly wish to share all of the magic we made together at M+B, in a way that feels warmer, more human, more fully a part of our lives.
Like Allan Kaprow wrote: "The line between art and life should be kept as fluid, and perhaps indistinct, as possible."
After twenty years, it feels like a natural evolution. A gallery doesn't necessarily need to look like a gallery. It can look like life.
And sometimes, it can simply feel like home.
Warmly,
Benjamin
