Nathan Zeidman: Sailboat Paintings

M+is pleased to announce Nathan Zeidman's online exhibition Sailboat Paintings. The show will be available online from July 18, 2020 to August 15, 2020.

My father always dreamed
To sail around the world someday
But he knew my mother never would
His health was in steady decline since I was a child.
Months before he died

He bought some old beat up boat
That could hardly float
We found out a few weeks after the funeral.
I had wanted to say these paintings were products of alienation, isolation, a willingness nonetheless, to get lost, stay lost, feel lost, be lost.
It is not unheard of, to go searching for the miraculous within the confines of a 12 x 12 ft room. Or an 11 x 14" canvas.
I learned a lot about color. My moods went up + down. I like to exhaust any motif that finds its way to me.

And in many ways, I postponed some grief.
I, still, am lost.
I love seeing sailboats, I love seeing sailboat pictures, prints, drawings, holograms, etc.
But, I want to go to the moon. That's what these are mostly about.

- Nathan Zeidman (2020)

Nathan Zeidman's paintings are characterized by their sense of place and dreamlike quality. Whether capturing everyday objects, sweeping landscapes or nighttime city scenes, Zeidman's images exist in timeless spaces that are both personal and universal. For their Sailboat paintings, Zeidman took a serial approach to the subject matter, using the simple triangular composition as a template in order to focus on paint and color in creating these intimate, atmospheric paintings.

Nathan Zeidman (b. 1990, Camden, NJ) attended the MFA program at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has a BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. In 2011, Zeidman attended the Yale Norfolk School of Art summer residency. The artist has exhibited in solo and group shows at High Art, Paris, France; Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles; Downs & Ross, New York; and Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, among others.
