Daniel Boccato’s parrotpaintingsare innocent in appearance, very agile, like children drawings. Compact and frenetic. The depiction of parrots in the Garden of Eden and in harems, together with their association with the idea of fidelity gave rise to the coloured feathers of the Archangel Gabriel’s wings seen in Medieval and Early Renaissance paintings. It is as if the messenger arrived disguised as a parrot to pass on the divine message and announce to us that this is the new Eve, the model of virtue and the doorway leading back into that Paradise which can no longer be enjoyed on earth.
Daniel Boccato (b. 1991, São Paulo, Brazil) lives and works in New York. He received his BFA from The Cooper Union in 2013. His work has been the subject of numerous solo presentations, including recent exhibitions at Ribot Gallery, Milan; Tabacalera, Madrid; Sorry We’re Closed, Brussels; Formatocomodo, Madrid; and Kasia Michalski Gallery, Warsaw. He has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including recent presentations at he.ro, Amsterdam; Carl Kostyál, Stockholm; Art Academy of Cincinnati, Cincinnati; The Journal Gallery, Brooklyn; Arsenal, Toronto; and Division Gallery, Montreal.
Angela Dufresne’s signature compositions, at once grandiose and humble, imagined and believable, scenic and chaotic, connect widely disparate icons of figuration, landscape, movies and urban tableaux into potent mises en scène.
Dufresne typically initiates her oil paintings on canvas with wildly gestural multi-color underpaintings, setting the stage for complexly composed “covers” of historical paintings. Finding kinship with artists such as Gustave Courbet, Joan Mitchell, Carrie Moyer, Catherine Murphy, Alice Neel, John Singer Sargent and Carolee Schneemann, while moving freely between pop cultural references and her own biography, the artist lays open classical themes (genre, figure, landscape, still-life) to social investigations of the present.
Angela Dufresne (b. 1969) was born in Olathe, KS. A solo exhibition of paintings by Dufresne titledJust My Typeis currently on view at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz, NY, and another solo exhibition Making a Scenewas recently on view at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, in Kansas City, MO. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; MoMAPS1, New York, NY; Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME; RISD Museum, Providence, RI; National Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, NY; Leslie-Lohman Museum, New York, NY; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn, NY; Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, OH; Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; and Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA, among others. The artist is the recipient of numerous awards including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; Guggenheim Fellowship; Siena Art Institute Residency; Yaddo Residency; Purchase Award, National Academy of Arts and Letters; Headlands Center for the Arts Resident and Jerome Foundation Fellowship. Dufresne currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Nevine Mahmoud’s objects are driven by material processes, where a property of the material is exposed or undone through developing the work. Her glass busts and breasts, while erotically charged, are also distinctly shaped to exaggerate the medium’s inherent hollowness and to emphasize the idea of space filling void. These truncated body parts function like phantom limbs, highlighting absence as much as they draw the viewer in to real forms.
Nevine Mahmoud (b. 1988, London) received her BA from Goldsmiths, University of London and MFA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her work was recently on view in The Artist is Presentcurated by Maurizio Cattelan at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. Recent group exhibitions include Dreamers Awake: Women Artists After Surrealism at White Cube, London; The Poet, the Critic and the Missing at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; MADEMOISELLE at the Centre Régional D’art Contemporain Occitanie in Sète; This is Presence at Ballroom Marfa; and The Lasting Concept at the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. Nathaniel Mary Quinn’s Performance Drawings are created using both hands drawing simultaneously (and sometimes upside down). Quinn’s ambidextrous approach is an attempt to tap deeper into his intuition by pushing his eye/hand coordination to the brink of his conscious ability.
Nathaniel Mary Quinn (b. 1977, Chicago, IL) received his BFA from Wabash College and MFA from New York University. Quinn’s work is currently on view in a three-person show, For Opacity: Elijah Burgher, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, and Toyin Ojih Odutola at The Drawing Center in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Nothing’s Funny at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; Highlights at M+B, Los Angeles; Past/Present at Pace Gallery, London; and Hybrids: The Windows Exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, New York. Rob Thom makes paintings that are keen observations of contemporary American life. Touching upon the traditions of Western painting and art history, his dense allegorical compositions often reveal the competing drives underpinning human character.
Rob Thom (b. 1975, Santa Barbara, CA) received his BFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions include New Paintings at NADA in Miami Beach, Florida, and Hackfestat the College of Creative Studies Gallery, housed in the University of California, Santa Barbara. Thom’s work has been included in group exhibitions such as Paintings from England & America at Crisp Gallery in London, and Brevity of Namesat Latned Atsar in Los Angeles. His work is featured in the collection of the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Notable press includes The New York Times, and TheLos Angeles Times. Thom lives and works in Bainbridge Island, Washington.
Jimmy Wright’s LA – NY 73 – 74 focuses on a crucial period in the artist’s development when Wright moved to New York in 1974 following a period of graduate study at the Art Institute of Chicago and a stay in Los Angeles. Two bodies of work will be on view: historical drawings produced in New York that capture Wright’s involvement with the subculture of gay bathhouses and clubs, and new works based on his stay in Los Angeles in the summer of 1973.
Jimmy Wright (b. 1944, Kentucky) earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1967 and an MFA from Southern Illinois University in 1971. In 2009, the Springfield Museum presented a major survey of Wright's work spanning twenty years of his career. Other institutional shows include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, CT, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include those at Corbett vs. Dempsey, Chicago and FIERMAN, New York, and his work was most recently on view in the Seam, the Fault, the Flaw at Greenspon Gallery, NY. Wright’s work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Springfield Art Museum, among others. His most recent monograph, Jimmy Wright: Bathhouse, Meatpacking District and the Dream Cards: New York Underground 1973-90, was published in 2016. Jimmy Wright lives and works in New York City.
